2017 Commemorations

From this October a number of events have been planned to mark the 102nd anniversary of Edith’s death.

October 7th 2017
Norwich Cathedral Commemoration Service at Edith Cavell’s grave 11.00am

Edith Cavell was buried at Life’s Green at the East end of Norwich Cathedral on May 15 1919.

There has been an annual service remembering her at the graveside for many years – the public are welcome to join in this short act of remembrance.

October 7th & 8th 2017
St Mary’s Church, Swardeston 2017 Cavell Flower Festival

Open 11.00am-5.00pm Saturday and Sunday: join us for a morning service in church on Sunday at 9.30am.

Spectacular flowers in the 14th century church where Edith’s father was vicar for over 40 years. Visit the nearby Sunday School room (for which Edith raised funds) to see Cavell memorabilia on display, and the Cavell Room next to the church for DVDs on Edith’s life and art and publications about her. The Rectory garden hosts delicious refreshments. There will be music in and around the church through the two days. At the Village Hall you will find stalls with produce, cakes, second hand books, bric a brac and more.

No entry charge.

Drop off point for disabled passengers at the church gate – parking on the Common.

Trafalgar Square London Commemoration at Edith Cavell’s statue 10.30am

The statue of Edith Cavell sculpted by Sir George Frampton stands across Trafalgar Square from that of Admiral Lord Nelson. It was unveiled in 1920. Each year an act of remembrance is held at its foot. The Cavell Nurses Trust, founded in her memory and working to assist nurses and health care workers in difficulty, coordinates the event. www.cavellnursestrust.org

Cromer Community Centre Edith Cavell – Facing the Silence (Judi Daykin as Edith Cavell – play by John Mangan) 7.30pm

Norfolk playwright John Mangan wrote this one-hander for Judi Daykin for the 2015 centenary of Edith Cavell’s death. The EDP’s review called the performance ‘powerful and provoking’. (EDP 11.4.2015). Judi has performed it in many Norfolk locations.
